The GIR-208 monoclonal antibody reacts with the human IFNγR (interferon gamma receptor) α chain also known as CD119 and IFNγ receptor 1. The IFNγR α chain is a 90-100 kDa type I transmembrane protein. CD119 heterodimerizes with the IFNγR β chain to form the IFNγR, a class II cytokine receptor. The IFNγR is expressed ubiquitously on almost all cell types with the exception of mature erythrocytes. Binding of the GIR-208 antibody to IFNγR α is reported to be specifically inhibited in the presence of excess IFNγ. Similarly, the antibody has been reported to block the binding of IFNγ to IFNγR α.
